Lung, Gena set to headline new-look Hunters in first trial
The SP PNG Hunters are set to unleash a wave of fresh talent in their first preseason hit-out against the Northern Pride this weekend. Assistant coach Enoch Maki says the club is eager to see their new recruits take center stage during the trial in Cairns.
The Hunters head into the match after nearly four months of intense preparation. For the new faces in the squad, Sunday represents a golden opportunity to impress the coaching staff and secure a spot on the final 2026 roster.
Among those ready to make an impact is lanky Snax Tigers graduate Jordan Steven. After a grueling preseason, Steven is determined to prove he belongs at the Hostplus Cup level.
"The coaches trusted me and brought me into the club, so I’m ready to prove to them that I can compete at this standard," Steven said. "It’s been challenging adapting to the Hunters' culture, but I’m glad to have made it this far. It’s a dream come true. I'm looking forward to the trials and hopefully making my debut in Round 1."
Stan Williams Park will host the clash this Sunday. Both the Hunters and the Pride are looking to test their structures and combinations just a fortnight out from the season opener.
Maki confirmed that exciting wingers Carlos Lung and Myles Banam, along with sneaky five-eighth Joel Gena and outside back Bruce Bawesa, are all slated to feature.
"Preparations toward the first game have been good. With so many new boys in the squad, we are doing everything to ensure they’re ready," Maki said. "We’re excited to see them play for the first time. With the support of skipper Ila Alu, Murray Connors, Jamie Mavoko, and other senior players, we plan to keep the game simple and minimize errors."
While the spotlight is on the debutants, regular campaigners like Seal Kalo are also looking to cement their positions in the Paul Aiton-coached side. The powerhouse prop is entering the season with a renewed focus on leadership.
"I don’t really talk much, which my teammates and coaches are aware of, but this season I want to improve my communication both on and off the field," Kalo said. "With the new boys coming on board, we want to maintain a strong team culture. Personally, I want to better myself from the previous season and help build the new players."
The Hunters' final squad for the 2026 season will be officially announced following their last trial in Goroka next week.
