Kundiawa mayor unveils survey plan to tackle unregulated development
Kundiawa town Mayor James Kuglame has taken decisive steps to address concerns over unregulated development and land management in the town, particularly the rapid rise of Chinese owned businesses.
Locals have raised concern about substandard structures popping up across town, claiming state land is being allocated to foreign investors without proper titles.
They say it exploits provincial resources while sidelining locals from economic opportunities. One anonymous resident said the absence of a functioning building board has allowed unchecked construction of houses and shops.
Mayor Kuglame acknowledged these issues head-on, announcing a comprehensive house to house survey across all nine wards in Kundiawa town.
The initiative aims to map registered and unregistered land occupants on state land, providing data for a robust development plan.
"Our plan now is to carry out a survey with all nine wards within Kundiawa town vicinity. After we have all the data, we will craft a solid development plan, however funding remains our biggest challenge at the moment," he said.
Locals are urging stricter building regulations, better support for local businesses, and urgent action on waste management and sewerage.
Mayor Kuglame in response, said he would be seeking funding from Simbu Provincial Government and other stakeholders to resolve these priorities and restore order.
