Prime Minister James Marape has called on the nation to honor Somare’s Generation of leaders and their enduring legacy as PNG marks the fifth anniversary of the passing of Grand Chief.

Coinciding with the country’s 50th year of independence, Marape said the anniversary serves as a powerful reminder of Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare's pivotal role in shaping the nation’s identity.

Marape said 26th of February is not just a time to remember his passing, but a time to consider the hardships of Somare’s Generation of leaders prior to independence.

He praised Somare and his like minded leaders who fought for independence in 1975, as many have now passed on, leaving new leaders to carry on the torch.

“The Somare generation endured hardship and division but came together to forge one united Papua New Guinea,” he said.

Marape outlined the Constitution as a lasting legacy that unites the country’s diversity under shared values of respect and equality.

Reflecting on Sir Michael’s leadership qualities, the Prime Minister called on Members of parliament and other aspiring leaders to learn from Sir Michael’s leadership qualities.

Marape concluded by uring citizens across all regions to honor grand chief's legacy not only through words but through actions that promote unity, service, and respect.
