New state-of-the-art equipment for Mt Hagen hospital
Mt Hagen Hospital is set to open a new radiology department equipped with modern medical machines that will improve health services for the Highlands region.
The new radiology department at the hospital will provide advanced services including CT Scan, Mammogram, X-ray and Ultrasound.
The modern equipment is expected to reduce the need for patients to be referred to other hospitals around the country, saving both time and money for families.
The machines were funded by Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited at a cost of K5 million, apart from the usual government support.
This project is a major milestone in upgrading Mt Hagen Hospital into a specialist referral center for the Highlands region.
As of early 2026, construction of the new department is nearing completion, with installation of the state-of-the-art equipment already underway.
The unit is expected to improve healthcare delivery by providing faster and more accurate diagnosis for patients in Western Highlands and surrounding provinces.
The new department is part of a broader modernization drive under the leadership of the Western Highlands Provincial Health Authority Board and management.
It also forms part of a larger strategic and clinical redevelopment plan for Mt Hagen Hospital, which has seen a dramatic rise in national rankings — moving from 8th place some years ago, to 1st place in 2023 and 2nd place in 2024.
Western Highlands Governor Wai Rapa thanked Kumul Petroleum and the Minister responsible William Duma on behalf of the Health Authority and the people of Western Highlands.
“Kumul Petroleum has shown continuous support to the people of Western Highlands, not only in health but also in other sectors such as supporting our police,” Governor Rapa said.
The new radiology department will officially open on the 25th of this month, marking another important step in strengthening healthcare services in the Highlands region.
