Brisbane Tigers secure decisive win over PNG Hunters
The Brisbane Tigers capitalized on critical errors to defeat the SP PNG Hunters 34-18 in their Round 5 Hostplus Cup clash at Totally Workware Stadium on Sunday.
Despite a spirited effort from the visitors, the Tigers’ clinical execution in the second half proved too much for the Hunters, who struggled to maintain momentum after a promising start.
The Tigers opened the scoring early when Zach Miles set up Leon Tahal for a try in the corner. The home side doubled their lead shortly after, with Miles again playing a pivotal role in a scoring play that rewarded the Tigers for sustained pressure.
The Hunters found a lifeline before the break when Douglas David intercepted a Tigers pass and raced the length of the field to score, shifting the momentum in favor of the Papua New Guinean side.
However, the second half belonged to the Tigers. Taj Wood crossed for two tries, the first coming off an opportunistic grubber kick that caught the Hunters' defense off guard. Wood’s second four-pointer, combined with a late try from fullback Zach Miles off another Wood grubber, effectively sealed the result for the Brisbane side.
While the Hunters showed glimpses of brilliance through individual runs by Murray Connors and the leadership of skipper Ila Alu, they were unable to overcome the Tigers' dominant middle-third performance.
Following their 34–18 win over the Hunters, the Brisbane Tigers have moved into the top four, maintaining a strong 4-1 record to start the season.
Meanwhile, the Paul Aiton-coached Hunters currently sit in 14th position. With only one win from five matches and a points differential of -37, the team faces a crucial Round 6 clash to stay within reach of the top eight.
The Hunters will need to look to address defensive lapses as they head into Round 6.
