From containers to modern bank: BSP opened a new branch in Hela
For years, BSP Bank in Hela Province operated out of shipping containers. Today, that has changed with the opening of a new modern branch in Tari.
Hela Governor Philip Undialu welcomed the new BSP building, describing it as a major step forward for the province.
The new branch was opened alongside a new Internal Revenue Commission (IRC) office at the Hela 2 Building.
Governor Undialu said the new facilities will give people better access to banking and tax services in one place.
He said the bank had been operating from containers for many years before moving into the new state-of-the-art building.
“This is a proud moment for BSP and the people of Hela,” he said.
The Governor also welcomed the introduction of deposit-enabled ATMs, which will make it easier for people and businesses to access banking services.
He marked the opening by making the first deposit of K100, witnessed by Prime Minister James Marape and other leaders.
Governor Undialu also acknowledged the presence of the IRC but raised concerns about low revenue returns to the province.
He said Hela collects less than K2 million in internal revenue despite being rich in natural resources.
“The people of Hela deserve a fairer share of the wealth from their land,” he said.
He added that similar services will be extended to other districts, supported by better roads and electricity to improve access and service delivery
