‘Vision over Money’: Luai reveals heart behind PNG Chiefs move

Rugby league superstar Jarome Luai has opened up on his decision to join the PNG Chiefs, revealing that a vision to transform a nation, rather than a record-breaking salary, was the catalyst for his historic move.

The Wests Tigers five-eighth, who recently returned from a high-profile visit to Port Moresby, confirmed he will lead the NRL’s 19th franchise when they enter the competition in 2028. While much of the rugby league world has focused on the tax-free incentives of the deal, Luai used a media address on Wednesday to shift the narrative towards the social impact of the Chiefs.

Luai explained that the deciding factor was not the financial package, but the emotional connection he felt during his time in Papua New Guinea.

"I think everyone wants me to say it’s the tax-free [money] and how appealing that is from the outside in, but that’s not what got the deal signed," Luai said. "Being over there, you sort of realize it’s bigger than a game over there. When the time comes, we’ll be able to change a lot of lives for the better."

Luai has been signed on a 2-year deal from 2028-2029 with an option to extend his contract to 2030.

The former Penrith Panther is expected to be paid around $2.2 million per season, tax free.

But he revealed that financial incentives was not the deciding factor.

The Samoan international spoke highly of the similarities between the Polynesian cultural and the Melanesian spirit of PNG, which ultimately made the Chiefs vision resonate with him on a personal level.

"It’s probably more of a vision… something that I resonated with. Being Polynesian, you know, there’s a lot of similarities. What that team’s eventually going to do for those people is just grow a nation."

The deal was finalized following a weekend where Luai and his family were hosted by franchise officials and Prime Minister James Marape. Luai said the experience was the final piece of the puzzle.

"It was a great experience. My family, my son, got the chance to come with [me]. And yeah, being there after all of that, that’s probably what got it sealed," he said.

The Blues playmaker also addressed concerns regarding his current deal with the Wests Tigers. Luai insisted the transition is being handled with full transparency. He confirmed he will remain with the Tigers through the 2027 season before heading to Port Moresby.

"The way my contract works and how it was structured, we broke no rules throughout the process," Luai clarified. "I thanked the coach and my teammates already; they were so transparent through it all. I'm really grateful that it’s been a smooth process."

The PNG Chiefs believe that securing Luai's marquee signature will attract more NRL stars as the club looks to build a competitive roster for their inaugural season in 2028.
