K700,000 funding surge ignites Kerowaghi Rugby League

The Kerowaghi Rugby Football League [RFL] commenced its 2026 season on Friday with significant financial backing, as local and provincial leaders pledged K700,000 to develop the district’s sporting landscape.

Under the banner "Leave No Kerowagian Behind," the launch drew a high-profile delegation of politicians and rugby league royalty, as a unified effort to utilize the code as a vehicle for social stability and economic empowerment in Simbu Province.

The Kerowaghi District Development Authority [DDA] led the fiscal commitment with a K500,000 allocation aimed at youth engagement and talent pathways. The funding pool was further bolstered by Goroka Open MP Aiye Tambua, who pledged an additional K200,000 in a gesture of cross-provincial solidarity.

Kerowaghi MP Francis Kikin Siune, the primary architect behind the season's theme, said the investment was a solemn promise to the district's youth.

"Sports like rugby league will unite us, expose our raw talents, and ensure no Kerowagian is left behind on the path to a stronger, healthier, and prosperous future," Siune told the gathered crowd.

He commended RFL president Joseph Diunde for the executive team’s efforts in professionalizing the local competition.

Simbu Governor Noah Kool, who officially kicked off the 2026 season, said the provincial government views rugby league through the lens of human capital development rather than mere recreation.

"Rugby league is far more than a game; it is a proven platform for instilling discipline and fostering teamwork," governor Kool said. "We are making a deliberate investment in our youth, equipping them to lead and uplift Kerowagi and Simbu tomorrow.

The 2026 launch was commanded for its technical depth, attended by a full delegation from the Simbu Provincial Rugby League Development Board [SPRLDB], including chairman John Kamane and coordinator Jamie Kola Miul.

The presence of national figures including PNGRFL Confederate officer Nuabe Kuipa and former Kumuls powerhouse Mosese Meninga, showcased a glimpse of KRL's strategic shift towards connecting rural talent with elite national programs like the SP PNG Hunters and the Digicel ExxonMobil Cup.

Other notable attendees included Regila Wilfred, head coach of the Mt. Hagen Eagles Santos Cup Women’s team, and former Eagles captain David Kawage. Their involvement is expected to provide Kerowagi’s athletes with access to modern coaching and strength-and-conditioning standards previously reserved for urban centers.

As the whistle blows on the new season, the K700,000 windfall sets a new benchmark for district-level sports funding in the Highlands, positioning Kerowagi as a rising hub for the national game.
