PNGTUC welcomes new EC
The Papua New Guinea Trade Union Congress has welcomed the appointment of Dr Nicole Haley as the new permanent Electoral Commission.
Assistant General Secretary, Anton Sekum, says the appointment is crucial as the country is stepping up election preparation for next year.
Dr Nicole Haley was appointed by the bipartisan Committee comprising the Prime Minister and Opposition Leader.
In a news conference this week, Assistant General Secretary, Anton Sekum, described the appointment as timely, as the country steps up preparation for the 2027 national election.
He also praised the continued recognition of women in top leadership roles in the country, regardless of race or nationality.
Mr Sekum further thanked Margaret Vagi for her efforts, particularly leading election preparation during her time, as Acting Electoral Commissioner.
Meantime, Dr Haley is tasked with tidying up the common roll, tightening security and restoring confidence in the electoral process for a period of four years.
