38 prisoners escaped from the Kerevat Correctional Services prison in East New Britain last night.

Police sources say at least three escapees have been recaptured while 35 are still at large.

Kerevat’s Jail commander Superintended John Poris has refused to comment on the jail break, indicating that an official statement will be released by the CS commissioner.

Meanwhile, East New Britain Provincial Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Amanda Kates, said a police patrol has been deployed on a manhunt.

She is currently liaising with the Kerevat jail commander to obtain the particulars of the escapees.

PPC Kates said a full police operation will begin once all the details are made available by the CS Kerevat administration.
