NCC partners East Sepik to strengthen cultural preservation and boost tourism

The National Cultural Commission [NCC] has formalised a partnership with the East Sepik Provincial Government through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding [MoU] aimed at preserving and promoting the province's rich cultural heritage.

Under the agreement, the NCC presented K500,000 to support cultural preservation initiatives, traditional practices, and activities that promote East Sepik's unique identity.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Belden Namah said protecting Papua New Guinea's diverse culture is a national priority, with many traditional customs and practices at risk of disappearing.

He said the ministry is supporting provinces with K500,000 and districts with K300,000 to strengthen cultural preservation efforts and ensure future generations continue to value and practice their cultural heritage.

East Sepik Governor Allan Bird, who welcomed the partnership, said it as a significant investment in safeguarding the province's cultural identity. He thanked the minister for the support, stating that it is the largest cultural funding the province has received from a national ministry.

"The province is committed to working closely with the National Cultural Commission to preserve East Sepik's cultural heritage while creating opportunities to promote tourism through culture," Bird said.

He also called for better coordination between the provincial government and the ministry, saying all cultural funding requests should be channelled through the province and that cultural events should align with the national cultural Commission calendar to improve planning and maximize support.

The partnership marks a significant step in strengthening collaboration between the National Cultural Commission and the East Sepik Provincial Government to ensure the province's rich cultural traditions are preserved and celebrated for generations to come.
