Popondetta primary school celebrates National Book Week
Popondetta Primary School joined educational institutions across the country in celebrating National Book Week, held annually during the first week of August.
Centering on this year’s theme, "Read a Book, Reset Your Future," students and teachers gathered outdoors to showcase a variety of creative activities.
Preparations took place throughout the week under the direction of special events coordinator Orerea Rex.
During the event, students engaged in writing short stories and original poems, creating thematic drawings, singing performance pieces, and staging short dramatic presentations.
According to Mrs Rex, the main objective of observance is to foster a strong reading culture and inspire continuous learning among students.
To keep this going, every classroom at Popondetta Primary School has established its own dedicated "library corner," stocked with books donated directly by the students themselves.
Complementing the week's festivities, Japan International Cooperation Agency [JICA] volunteer teacher Kitayama Atsuhiro spearheaded a project aimed at building custom bookshelves for each classroom at the school.
Speaking to NBC News, Mr Atsuhiro explained that funding for the initiative was provided by a Japanese organization working in partnership with sponsors from Singapore.
Following the successful implementation at Popondetta Primary School, Mr Atsuhiro plans to extend the bookshelf project to two additional schools in the Northern Province: Crusade Primary School and Bethel Primary School.
