Situm Health Centre in Morobe’s Nawaeb District is the first facility in the district to receive essential medical supplies under the District Medicine Support Program, aimed at addressing ongoing shortages in rural health facilities.

The District MP, Theo Pelgen said the program is a critical step toward strengthening healthcare services in remote communities.

“This support is not intended to replace the National Government's supply, it is to ensure our rural health centres like Situm continue to function effectively while awaiting regular government shipments,” he said.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Nawaeb District Development Authority, complements the National Government's medical supply, which have been affected by delays and inconsistent deliveries.

The initial consignment delivered to Situm Health Centre includes a range of essential medicines such as antibiotics, antimalarial drugs, analgesics [pain relief medication], anti-inflammatory medicines, and blood supplements for antenatal mothers.

Pelgen noted that the supplies are sufficient to sustain ongoing medical needs while helping bridge critical gaps in availability.

Under the program’s implementation plan, medical supplies will be ordered on a monthly basis, with weekly distribution and pickup scheduled across the district’s health facilities. The rollout of the program will follow a phased approach, beginning with Situm Health Centre, followed by the Boac, Oligiduc, Boana and the Torowa health centres.

The Medicine Support Program highlights the Nawaeb District Development Authority’s commitment to ensuring that rural populations have reliable access to life-saving medicines.
