A high-risk remand detainee has escaped custody and is now on the run, prompting a joint manhunt by Correctional Service officers and police.

Bomana Correctional Institution Commander, Chief Superintendent Yelly Oiufa, confirmed that Mileng Kapli escaped from Port Moresby General Hospital on Monday, April 20, between 11am and 12pm.

Kapli, a former PNGDF soldier, is facing a murder charge over the death of his partner last year.

Mr Oiufa said Kapli was among five detainees taken to the hospital for medical treatment under the supervision of three Correctional Service officers when he managed to escape.

He confirmed that internal investigations are now underway into the incident.

As part of the process, the three officers on duty at the time will be suspended while investigations determine whether there was any negligence.

“If there is sufficient evidence of misconduct, the officers will face the Institution Disciplinary Board,” Mr Oiufa said.

He added that Correctional Service officers are working closely with police to track down and recapture the escapee.

Authorities have warned the public that Kapli is dangerous and should not be approached.

Members of the public are urged not to harbour him, as doing so is a criminal offence.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is advised to contact the Bomana Prison Commander or Boroko Police Station.
