Maprik township under lockdown after police barracks torched
The township of Maprik in East Sepik Province has been placed under lockdown following a violent incident that saw five duplex houses at the New Town Police Barracks burned down overnight.
Reports from the East Sepik Provincial Command say the unrest erupted after the suspicious death of a young man from Serikum Village. In retaliation, nearby villagers stormed the police barracks, setting fire to the properties that caused extensive damage.
Provincial Police Commander Superintendent, Christopher Tamari confirmed the lockdown and issued a stern ultimatum:
“Police have given 24 hours for the surrender of those involved in the destruction and burning down of police properties,” he said.
A disappointed Superintendent Tamari has called for the immediate surrender of those responsible.
The lockdown is to restore order and prevent further escalation, as authorities work to identify and apprehend those responsible.
Investigations will continue amid allegations that the deceased died while in police custody. His body was discovered along the Amaku River bank near Maprik town.
