Maprik MP condemns destruction
The Member for Maprik, Libert Kapris, has strongly condemned the destruction of state properties following the tragic death of Jude Nandi, urging citizens to uphold the rule of law and protect the town’s growing role as a hub for commerce in the central Sepik region.
“Grief and anger are natural responses, but they do not justify lawlessness,” Kapris said. “The rule of law must prevail regardless of provocation, as people living in a civilized society are expected to behave accordingly.”
The MP warned against repeating the destruction seen in 2024, stressing that retaliation undermines Maprik’s progress. “Citizens must control their actions and follow the law before Maprik destroys itself,” he stated. “The State and its agencies operate for the benefit of every citizen, and therefore restraint must be exercised to ensure mutuality is maintained.”
Kapris confirmed that the security situation remains under control, with reinforced police presence and arrests already made. He assured the public that businesses remain open and services are operating normally. “There is no cause for panic, Maprik remains open for business,” he said.
The Member also called on communities harboring suspects to surrender them peacefully. “No harm will come to those who surrender,” he assured. “This cooperation will facilitate proper investigations and allow innocent persons to clear their names.”
A full forensic investigation will be conducted into the circumstances surrounding Mr. Mundi’s death, with the MP affirming that justice will be served fairly. “No person, whether civilian or state official, is above the law,” Kapris declared. “Maprik shall not be destroyed by anger or retribution. All parties will work together to deliver justice and secure sustainable peace and harmony once again.”
He extended condolences to the family of the late Jude Nandi and sympathies to police personnel and public servants who lost homes in the fire. “Their loss is acknowledged, and the need for support to all affected parties is recognised,” he said.
In his final appeal, Kapris urged patience and restraint: “Through collective resolve, Maprik will emerge stronger.”
