PNG welcomes Timor-Leste President for bilateral talks and Oceans Summit
Prime Minister James Marape today welcomed President José Ramos-Horta to Papua New Guinea for bilateral talks and the inaugural Melanesian Oceans Summit 2026 in Port Moresby.
President Ramos-Horta is visiting PNG from May 10 to 13 at the invitation of Prime Minister Marape.
The visit is aimed at strengthening relations between Timor-Leste and Papua New Guinea, while also promoting regional cooperation on ocean and climate issues.
“The presence of President Ramos-Horta underscores the shared commitment of our nations to regional cooperation and ocean stewardship,” Prime Minister Marape said.
“We welcome him warmly as we begin important discussions on our partnership and our common future in the Blue Pacific.”
Following bilateral meetings, President Ramos-Horta will attend the Melanesian Oceans Summit, which officially opens on Monday in Port Moresby.
The summit is the first of its kind and will bring together leaders and representatives from across the Pacific region to discuss ocean governance, climate resilience and sustainable marine development.
Heads of state, ministers and senior representatives from 13 countries are attending the summit.
Countries confirmed to attend include Fiji, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Tonga, Timor-Leste, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Philippines, Palau, Nauru, Australia, New Zealand and Solomon Islands.
The summit will continue throughout the week in Port Moresby.
Papua New Guinea and Timor-Leste established diplomatic relations on 22 July 2002 following an ACP Group conference in Fiji.
Timor-Leste also shares cultural and historical ties with Melanesian and Pacific countries and has continued to strengthen its engagement with Pacific regional organisations over the years.
