Teacher assault condemned

The physical assault of a teacher in the nation's capital last week - a video of which went viral on social media, has been met with strong condemnation.

The video shows the NCD Education First Assistant Secretary punching a teacher, reportedly over what's been described as "deliberate administrative delays and targeted neglect within NCD Education."

Teaching Service Commission Acting Chairman, Maini Mike Ugaia, says while reports indicate that the teacher threatened the FAS before the physical altercation - which is entirely wrong, the FAS should have reported the matter instead of resorting to personal behaviour.

The incident stemmed from non-adherence to official directive instructing NCD Education authorities to reinstate a group of displaced teachers to their rightful positions, including the assaulted teacher.

Mr Ugaia says while NCD authorities complied with the order for most affected teachers, they failed to take action for one specific individual - whose case was neglected for over seven months, placed on payroll suspension, and without an income since April.

The Commission has advised its NCD Advisor to secure an available vacant position immediately and place the affected teacher so he can be restored to the payroll without further delay.

It also called on provinces to establish an independent disciplinary committee to ensure teacher conduct issues are resolved through proper legal channels.
