Construction work on the new Numuru bridge is progressing well, according to the Department of Works and Highways in Madang.

Construction workers began launching the new bridge across the river on Wednesday after successfully assembling it early this week.

They completed the process yesterday morning and have moved onto the next phase of installing decks and then, work on the footings.

The Numuru bridge collapsed last month under a heavy load of gravel that was on route to Bogia for similar civil works.

The bridge is likely to be ready for use in a week's time.

NBC News was on site yesterday and witnessed the completion of the bridge launching.

Locals we spoke to expressed gratitude to the government and the Department of Works and Highways for fast- tracking the construction of the new bridge.

Commuters are currently still using a bamboo footbridge and boats to cross over the river at a fee of K2.00 per person whilst charges for cargoes vary, depending on the loads.

Buai buyers and sellers are equally happy with the progress of reconstruction, stating the past weeks have been challenging for them as they continue to pay K10 for a bag of betelnut to be ferried across the river.

Meanwhile, wet- crossing on the beach front is no longer possible as it trespasses a conservation area, and locals were charging a hundred kina per vehicle.
