Local LLG Presidents responsible for areas greatly affected by Cyclone Maila in Milne Bay Province have called on the Government to place emphasis on preparedness and response for future disasters and emergencies.

Presidents from the Yeleyamba, Murua, and Louisiaide rural local level government areas in Samarai Murua District say this gap was greatly felt during this disaster, and it must not be repeated.

Bernard Jack, the Yeleyamba President covering Sudest and Rossel Islands, expressed that this was one of the worst cyclones to pass through Milne Bay, given it took longer than usual and may have caused far greater damage to island communities, and preparedness was lacking.

Pantan David, President for Murua LLG agreed and concluded his Woodlark area was hit the hardest and any help as soon as possible needed to go out for his people, thanking Alotau District for being first to respond as such, a sentiment shared by them all.

It’s understood that the Provincial Disaster & Emergency Committee has endorsed activation for all its District Disaster & Emergency Committees, Alotau District, on Monday, began its assessments of areas in the north coast and down to Suau, while a first responder team out of the Provincial Emergency Operating Center will also be dispersed for assessment and relief supplies this week.
