The Vice Chancellor of the University of Papua New Guinea, Professor Ian Findlay, dismissed students gathered at the Forum Square during lunchtime today, amid concerns of a possible protest over the current tense situation.

Students were instructed to leave the Forum Square and return to their homes, dormitories, or lectures.

The Vice Chancellor declined to comment on speculation surrounding a potential protest or the broader political situation. However, he made it clear that no form of protest would be allowed within the university premises.

Professor Findlay emphasized that the university, as the country’s highest learning institution, must protect its academic environment and ensure that external issues do not disrupt student learning or progress.

He acknowledged the university’s history of student reactions to national issues but assured that the institution’s approach would be different this time.

He reiterated that student learning remains the top priority, especially as the university is now in the 10th week of Semester One, with tests, assignments, and projects underway.

Meanwhile, students approached by NBC News declined to comment on camera but indicated that the Student Representative Council is expected to release a statement on Friday.

University security, UniForce, has strengthened measures across campus, including at the main entrance, to ensure that academic activities continue without disruption.
