Mendi Munhiu prioritizes maternal health care

Six new maternity wings have been established across health centers in the Mendi-Munhiu district in Southern Highlands province.

The improved facilities will provide health workers with a more suitable environment to conduct antenatal checks, monitor pregnancies, assist with deliveries and respond to complications.

Mendi Munhiu, MP Raphael Tonpi said the first of the new maternity facilities at Topa Health Centre in Karinz local level government, has already been completed and commissioned.

“Every mother deserves safe and quality health care, regardless of whether she lives in town or in a remote village,” he said.

Each of the six health centres will also be supported with a brand-new ambulance to strengthen emergency referrals and ensure mothers and other patients can be transported quickly to higher-level health facilities when necessary.

Mr Tonpi said the maternity facilities are developed through a partnership between the District’s Development Authority and the Provincial’s Health Authority.

He said K300,000 has been allocated to each maternity facility to support construction and improve the standard of maternal healthcare available in the district.

Mr Tonpi confirmed that the remaining four maternity wings are expected to be commissioned in the coming weeks at Munhiu, Wais, Pingirip and Mogol health centres.
