Lae to host 50th national fishing titles

Lae will host the 50th GFA PNG National Fishing Titles from March 20 to 28, 2027, with more than 400 anglers expected from PNG and overseas.

Lake Anne Fishing Club president Scott Randell said five boats from Cairns have already shown interest, with more local anglers expected to take part.

The competition will include men's, women's and junior categories, targeting marlin, sailfish and other pelagic species in the Huon Gulf.

Registration and the official opening will be held on March 19 at the Lae Yacht Club, with Deputy Prime Minister and Lae MP John Rosso expected to open the event.

A total of 54 prize categories will be contested.

Randell said organisers hope to beat the more than 300 anglers who attended the national titles when Lae last hosted the event in 2023.

Meanwhile, Trukai Industries has renewed its partnership with the Game Fishing Club for another four years.

Trukai National Sales and Marketing Manager Heral Buksh said the company will continue supporting sport in PNG.

The agreement gives Trukai exclusive rights for rice and flour products under the partnership.

Trukai Industries, SP Brewery, Highlands Petroleum and PNG Ports are among the naming sponsors for the 2027 titles.
