Boat and engine retrieved-11-still missing
Search and rescue teams have recovered the missing boat and its engine at Wei Island near Wewak, but the 11 passengers remain missing.
The 23‑foot boat, powered by a 60hp outboard motor, left Kubugam for Dumad, South Karkar Island on Saturday night, September 26. Between 7 and 8 p.m., the vessel encountered engine failure in rough seas, began taking in water, and drifted away under strong currents.
SAR teams reclaimed the boat and engine at Wei Island and have now retreated back to Madang for further coordination. No survivors were found with the vessel.
Team leader Udil Lapiu has appealed to Wewak islanders and coastal villages to remain vigilant and report any sightings of survivors, debris, or drift bodies. He also thanked the Karkar community in Wewak for their support in assisting the ongoing search.
Authorities emphasize that community vigilance is critical as the fate of the passengers remains unknown.
The situation remains urgent. While the boat and engine have been found, the 11 passengers are still missing. Search and rescue operations continue.
