Koroba’s first FODE students to sit for National Examination
Koroba-Kopiago MP William Bando says he is encouraged to see initiatives that give young people a second chance in education.
He said the registration of the Koroba District Flexible Open and Distance Education (FODE) Centre is an important step towards providing opportunities for those who have left school or missed out on formal education.
"Next Monday, first 120 students from Koroba District FODE will sit for their examinations. This is an important milestone for our district and a proud moment for these students, who have chosen to continue their education despite the challenges they have faced. I wish them all the best, together with other students across Hela Province and Papua New Guinea who will be sitting for their FODE examinations," Bando said.
The MP said recently when a young man in one of the WhatsApp groups he belongs to shared the examination parcel for the Koroba FODE Centre.
"Seeing this reminded me that many of our young people still have the desire to learn and improve their lives when given the right opportunities," he said.
Mr Bando said the district has committed funding to support school dropouts and those who could not continue their formal education.
"Our commitment to Pastoral Schools and alternative learning opportunities will continue because we believe every child and young person deserves a chance to learn, develop skills, and build a better future," he said.
He said FODE is a national government education program designed to widen access to education throughout Papua New Guinea. It provides a pathway for those who could not complete their schooling through the conventional system.
"Whatever circumstances forced you to leave school, do not give up on your education," Bando said.
He added that the Hela Provincial Government is also working towards establishing TVET centres to provide practical skills in areas such as business, carpentry, plumbing, and other trades.
"These opportunities can help our young people become self-reliant, establish small businesses, secure employment, and contribute to the development of their district, province, and country," he said.
"To our young people back home in Koroba and Lake Kopiago, I encourage you to find a FODE centre or school near you and explore the available opportunities to continue your education. If you left school because of family problems, financial difficulties, distance, or other circumstances, please do not lose hope. Education does not end when you leave the classroom. You can return to learning, acquire new skills, and create opportunities for yourself."
MP Bando also called on parents, community leaders, churches, and ward councillors to support young people to enrol in FODE and other available learning programmes in 2027.
"Let us also encourage those who are currently preparing for their examinations to remain focused, work hard, and do their best,” he said.
