Indonesia bush fires linked to haze over Port Moresby
The National Weather Service [NWS] has confirmed that the haze currently affecting Port Moresby is linked to bush fires in Indonesia.
NWS Deputy Director Kasis Inape has urged the public to take precautionary measures, including wearing face masks when outdoors and boiling drinking water before consumption.
Haze has been visible over the city for the past two weeks, reducing visibility over long distances.
The haze occurs when tiny particles remain suspended in the air.
Mr Inape explains why the smoke and pollutants have remained in the atmosphere.
Mr Inape says the pollutants include carbon monoxide, which can harm people's health, particularly children and people with respiratory conditions.
With the hazy conditions continuing, the public is also being urged to avoid lighting unnecessary fires.
