One dead in a hit and run in Madang
A motorist was arrested in Madang today following an early morning hit- and- run incident along the Modilon Road.
The victim, in his late 20s and from a mixed parentage of Madang and East Sepik, died instantly.
The deceased, believed to be an employee of PNG Pawa, was walking alone along the Modilon Road between 3 and 4am today when he was hit by a speeding vehicle.
The incident was captured by CCTV cameras at nearby shops, with police using the footage to identify the vehicle involved.
Police tracked down a black taxi and apprehended its driver. They have yet to release an official statement on the incident, but an investigation is now underway.
The vehicle remains in police custody as investigators work to establish the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Today's incident is the second fatal accident along the Modilon Road in just over a week.
The first case occurred at the Holy Spirit school crossing, in which an elderly pedestrian was knocked over by a vehicle, resulting in instant death also.
