Pacific Ocean is at risk of climate threats

Pacific Leaders are calling for urgent action as Pacific Ocean is at risk if global warming exceeds 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Vanutau's Minister for Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management Ralph Regenvanu said this when addressing the media, during the leaders meeting in Koror, Palau, recently.

“We know that greenhouse gas emissions come from fossil fuels and we must urgently accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels.” Regenvanu said.

He reminded all states that the International Court of Justice's advisory opinion identified the collective temperature goal as being of holding the global average temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius, above pre-industrial levels.

“This is recognised by the court. If emissions are not rapidly reduced in the next four years, any overshoot of 1.5 degrees Celsius will grow in both duration and severity, intensifying climate impacts and increasing loss and damage for all our communities in the Pacific.” He said.

Minister Regenvanu made a call to the oil producing countries to fossil fuel that they need the political will to transition away from fossil fuels.
