Papua New Guinea and Niue sign framework agreement

Papua New Guinea and Niue have signed a framework agreement on development and technical cooperation.

The deal sets out a framework for cooperation in areas such as economic development, technical assistance and capacity building.

The agreement was signed between Prime Minister James Marape and Niue PM Dalton Tagelagi on the sidelines of the 55th Pacific Islands Forum leaders’ meeting in Koror, Palau.

PM Marape said the agreement reflects PNG's commitment to strengthening cooperation within the Pacific family and sharing knowledge, expertise and resources.

He explains the framework provides an overarching mechanism through, which the two countries can develop specific programs according to key priorities.

The agreement identifies a range of areas from trade, investment, tourism, economic cooperation, education, labour mobility, renewable energy, digital connectivity and people to people exchanges.

PM Marape says the agreement also complements the 2050 strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent by strengthening partnerships in the region and building greater resilience and self-reliance.

In the meantime, the framework, whilst in effect, can be terminated if either country gives six months' notice.
