Search and rescue teams are continuing operations after a boat carrying 11 passengers from Kubugam to Karkar Island went missing on Saturday night, September 26.

The 23‑foot boat, powered by a 60hp outboard motor, encountered engine failure between 7 and 8 p.m. in rough seas. The vessel began taking in water and drifted away under strong currents.

On Wednesday, September 30, the boat and engine were found at Wei Island near Wewak, but none of the passengers were located. The discovery has shifted the search focus to the Eastern Wewak coastline, and Schouthen Islands, where currents may have carried survivors or debris.

Local rescuers Madang Rapid Response Network (MRRN) supported by the Sumkar DistrictDevelopmentAuthority, have extended searches into Wewak East Sepik Province.

Authorities, including the National Maritime Safety Authority (NMSA) and Madang Provincial Disaster Director Rudolph Mongalee in a recent statement, have warned that non‑compliance with the Small Craft Act and disregard for weather advisories remain major causes of sea mishaps. Mongalee noted that Karkar and Bagabag islands account for half of boating incidents in Madang waters.

Coastal communities across Karkar Island, Kubugam, Dylup, Mirap, Bunabun, and Wewak are urged to remain vigilant and report any sightings of survivors, debris, or drift bodies to MRRN contacts, Police, Ward/LLG authorities, or local SAR teams.

The fate of the 11 passengers remains unknown. Search and rescue operations are ongoing.
